New Media -apps

Currently lots of platforms and companies develop new apps every day, some of them very useful, some other for fun like games, etc. Last year JavaScrip become even more dominant via and ever-expanding ecosystem of frameworks. Samsung tried to establish itself as its own platform in the Android market. API technology generated a lot of buzz in 2013 as a way to access services and create revenue-generating opportunities  for developers. PaaS cloud computing got a second look and is set big things for this new year, analysts say.

Apps created everyday are used for fun, knowledge, problem solving, directions, etc. There are apps to edit, put filters and more, to photographs. There are also apps to download books and read them on the same app. The GPS apps are very useful, as instead of buying an expensive GPS, you could just download an app on your smartphone and do the same and more you could do with a GPS.

App development process:

-Who is it for?
-What is the purpose of the app?

Phone's are not like computers, you cannot install a different operating system (OS) if you do not like the one the device came with. A mobile OS reflects your lifestyle, because it determines the choice of apps and phone functionality.

The most important softwares for apps are: Palm OS, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Symbian, Android and Iphone OS.

To distribute these apps exist different apps previously installed in your phone to see and download new ones. For Iphone OS you have the Apple Store where you find all the apps available, for Android you have Google Play where you find apps for Android, etc.

The Native and hybrid apps are installed in an app store, whereas web apps are mobile optimized webpages that look like an app. Both hybrid and web apps render HTML web pages, but hybrid apps use app-embedded browsers to do that.

-Native Apps: If you are designing a service or utility app that requires real speed and you want to use the native features of the OS running on a given device, then for your best bet is to code a native aoo, think instagram.
-Web Apps: In other words, apps that live entirely online and run in a web browser tab.
-Hybrid Apps: A native app built using HTML, CSS and Javascript, making it faster to run.

New Media -hyperlocal media

Hyperlocal connotes information oriented around a well defined community with its primary focus directed toward the concerns of its residents. The term can be used as a noun in isolation or as a modifier of some other term (e.g. news). When used in isolation it refers to the emergent ecology of data (including textual content), aggregators, publication mechanism and user interactions and behaviours which centre on a resident of a location and the business of being a resident. More recently the term hyperlocal has become synonymous with the combined use of mobile applications and gps technology.

 Nesta and the Technology Strategy Board have jointly worked to develop the Hyperlocal Media competition, launching in October. With a total fund of £2.5million for collaborative research and development, the aim will be to invest in several significant projects across the UK. Some these will be deployed in specific geographical areas, but all are intended to develop the kinds of enabling technologies, platforms and services which build up the businesses of the future and help the UK to become a world-centre for hyperlocal media.

New Media -social media

Social Media is a set of supports that allows to link information through the internet and are conformed by social networks and virtual communities. The social media let us be active or passive actors in the internet information generation. Is the evolution of Mass Media concept, that emphasizes global covering being a more traditional concept. The social media changes radically the information management. The users go from being only readers to being redactors as well.

Not long ago the redactors of the pages use to decide the contents, now the users decide via 'share buttons', to share the information. This can be achieve  in the social networks, blogs or posting part of the content in other sites -like on facebook that you could paste a link of youtube, and you are sharing a video that way. In the present anybody could link in seconds the content in their social network.

Facebook Open Graph

Few years ago Facebook launched its Open Graph that basically consists in a platform based the users social aspect and any company could use it. For example Spotify, if you are log in Facebook, uses Open Graph to post what you are listening to, in a way you are socializing a content of what you are doing.

Open Graph's operation is relatively simple and helps improve the communication between companies and users, as specific actions made by the users are posted and shared in their timelines, news feed and ticker.

Google services

Google started as an internet research engine, now controls almost all the market as it has lots of services on the internet including apps, blogs, browser, maps and emails. 

Location based services

The LBS look to offer a personalized service to the users based in their geographic location. For it's operation uses geographic information systems of the user by, for example, GPS, or the server side, for example, the network being used.

The apps that use LBS look to give geographic services in real time. Some typical examples are GPS apps or maps, they use you location to set routes to a destination you want to go. It is used mostly in mobile phones.

These are some apps that use LBS: TomTom Mobile, Nokia Sports tracker, Ebay, Amazon, etc.

New Media -mobile devices


In 1996 Motorola launched one of the first mobile phones with display screens and flip top. During the same year, Nokia presented the first smartphone called 9000, it was the first all in one phone, it had the normal characteristics of a phone (calls, texts), and several applications for a daily use like: email, word processor, diary, etc. It also had a fully QWERTY keyboard.

The same company, launched the first ever mobile phone with WAP browser, making the other companies to improve their phones and keep introducing new things to the market.

Once again, Nokia develop one of the first 3G phones in 2003,with  size of 87 x 78 x 19 mm and a weight of 123g it was and still is, the smallest and lightest mobile phone. It had a screen size of 31 x 39 mm and 128 x 160 pixels with 65.536 colours.

In 2006, Benefon introduced the first mobile phone with GPS built in, it was sold mostly in Europe.

The following year, Apple launched their first phone, the Iphone, also the first of the Iphone series. It was released in June 2007, with a lot of innovations like auto rotate sensor, multi touch sensor, fully touch screen, that replaced the traditional keyboards, including old creations but improved, 2MP camera, 3.5 inches screen with 320 x 480 pixels.

On September 2013, Apple released their latest phone in the Uk, the Iphone 5s. With a retina display of 4 inches diagonal widescreen, multi touch display fingerprint resistant. The principal camera has 8MP and it can record videos in 1080p HD. Using IOS7, is the most intelligent phone available nowadays.

Currently exist several operational systems for phones like Blackberry os, Apple os, Android os, Windows os, Nokia os, Bada os, Symbian os, among others.

Older phones used to use 1G analog network, it had only a speed of 2.4 kbps, it capable of making and receiving phone calls only. 2G is a digital network of a speed of 64 kbps, this network is still used by some phones, it was capable of sending and receiving SMS, multimedia texts, also received and make phone calls, and allows connection to the internet. Those two networks were part of the narrowband era. 3G is the most used network nowadays, has a 2 Mbps, allowing you to do everything of 2G but faster, plus the use of applications like games of other kind of application. Not long from now we will be using the broadband network called 4G, is going to have 1 Gbps, the fastest ever network speed.

When the mobile phones started to appear where very expensive, currently almost everybody have a mobile phone.

The innovation of mobile phones had a huge impact on the society, everybody would like to have the last mobile phone with all the new thing that they can do. Any improvement on a mobile phone series is big, also the apps available, including social networks; where people post comments, pictures, etc; improvements to current phone option, like camera apps, which use the same mobile camera but in their own app to edit, stylize or put filters to make them look better.

Persistence of vision and the 12 rules of animation

Persistence of vision:
Is the name of the phenomenon of an image staying in the retina for a short period of time, when another image appears, this phenomenon gives the illusion of movement. In others words, image after image with this phenomenon creates motion.

Principles of animation:
The principles of animation were introduced by Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas in 1930, they were animators at Walt Disney Studios.
These principles were and are still being used for animators in lots of films, tv shows, gaming, and any other way of animation. With these principles the animations look more realistic, for example the bouncing ball looks better and more realistic with the squash and stretch principle.

12 principles of animation:

1.Squash and stretch. This principle is commonly used by animators, it consist of giving a sense of weight and flexibility to an object, it could be used on simple and complex objects. Here is an example of squash and stretch used in "ratatouille" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwLKPDJqldw

2.Anticipation. It is used to prepare the viewer that a character is about to perform a major movement, like kick a football, it is not just kicked, you have to put your leg backwards and then kick it. This movement its used in almost all the movements people do in real life.



3.Staging. An action should tell the viewer the attitude, mood, reaction or idea of the character and it has to relate to the story and its continuity. Also using different camera shots or angles of the same action in the timeline helps in telling the story and making the viewer interested.


4.Straight ahead action and pose to pose. Consist on animate key frames and then fill the gaps, it is also known as frame to frame animation.

6.Slow out and slow in. There are more frames when an action starts and finishes than in between the starting and finishing point. 

7.Arcs. Most actions follow a circular path to give the animation a realistic movement, as in real life, our arms and head move in an arc when walking, running, etc, the animals do the same, this is why this principle is used in animations.



8.Secondary motion. It is giving a character already moving another action, for example a character walking and smoking, the second action it would be smoking, adding more dimension to the animation.

9.Spacing and timing. Basically this principle says: the more drawings between poses slower and smoothly the action will go, the fewer drawings make the action faster and crisper.


10.Exaggeration. Its just like the word says "exaggerates" any movement to make it funnier or more dynamic.


11.Solid drawing. This is the basic principles of drawing form, weight, volume solidity in the illusion of 3d.


12.Appeal. Its the principle that says the animation as to be likeable, with charisa, make the viewer laugh or cry, being cute and cuddly.
